Flats fishing, also known as back country fishing is commonly
called the most rewarding type of fishing on the planet. Unlike
larger fishing boats that give an impersonal, mass market,
commercial experience, chartering a flats guide is more like
fishing at home with an old friend. The only difference is that
in Key West the fish are huge, the water is clear and tropical,
and your friend (Capt. J) is an experienced professional that
knows exactly where the biggest fish are! |
| Sight Fishing on the Flats |
|
Sight fishing starts when your guide turns off the engine and
climbs on the platform at the back of the flats boat. While standing
on the platform, the guide uses a long push pole to silently
propel the boat over the clear, shallow flats. As you make your
way across these beautiful, shallow flats, your guide is keeping
watch for schools of fish. When the guide spots the fish, he
quickly instructs you where to cast your line. After you make
your cast, you actually watch the beautiful fish approach your
bait, eat it, and then give you the fight of your life. The
thrill of finding, casting to and seeing a tropical fish take
the bait and run is a very exciting and rewarding experience. |

In addition to the uniqueness of sight fishing, a Flats Fishing charter
also give visitors a chance to see an ecosystem that less than
1% of all Key West visitors ever see. The area we fish is known
as the Great White Heron and Key West National Wildlife refuge.
Started by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1911, this area of
the lower keys still looks exactly as it did when the Spanish
Conquistadors first arrived in the early 1500's. In addition to
world class fishing, you'll see many different types of seabirds
and marine life. Capt. J has a great appreciation for this
unique environment and feels privileged to be able to share his
vast knowledge of it with you. When you have the opportunity to
fish with Capt J, you'll get off the boat with some fascinating
new knowledge in addition to some great fishing stories. |
